Conservatives abandon Ring of Fire

OTTAWA – Less than a week after the Prime Minister blamed the provincial government for the suspension of operations at the Ring of Fire development, NDP MPs Carol Hughes (Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing) and Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) asked the following questions to the government.

Hughes' question:

“Mr. Speaker, a few days ago, the company Cliffs Natural Resources announced it was indefinitely suspending its activities in northern Ontario’s Ring of Fire. Thousands of jobs are at stake and the economic development of many northern communities depends on it. But the prime minister doesn’t seem to care about the consequences of Cliffs Natural Resources’ decision. Why are the Conservatives once again neglecting development and jobs in northern Ontario?”

Gravelle's question:

“Mr. Speaker, the President of the Treasury Board, appointed to lead the federal government's response to the Ring of Fire, is now missing in action. He once said this project would “improve the quality of life for thousands,” but when the first sign of uncertainty arrives, the Conservatives simply shrug and blame the province. Why have they walked away from the Ring of Fire?”
