Hughes pays tribute to Bob Manuel in Parliament

Ottawa – Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, MP Carol Hughes rose in parliament today to honour the life of Robert Manuel, a veteran of the Korean War, community activist, and long-time resident of Elliot Lake.

Manuel, who passed away in April, left his mark on his community and his country in a way Hughes thought all Canadians would appreciate.

“Bob initiated recognition for Canadian Peacekeepers Day in Ontario, but is best known for his work to have Vimy Ridge Day acknowledged as a national heritage day in Canada,” said Hughes.  “A week before his passing, he was Master of Ceremonies as Royal Canadian Legion Branch 561 marked the100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.”

Hughes itemized an impressive string of volunteer contributions that will ensure Manuel’s memory lives on.

“His patriotism always shone through and his neighbours will miss his unique display of the Canadian Flag on Canada Day,” said Hughes.  “I feel fortunate to have known and worked with Bob over the years. He was a special person who was committed to his community and will be deeply missed by his comrades and family.”
